Happy Hour

"IF A LIFETIME CAN BE LIKENED TO A DAY, THEN THIS IS HAPPY HOUR!"
BUCK PENNINGTON

Mother, Mother Ocean

Mother, Mother Ocean, I've heard you call
Wanted to sail upon your waters since I was three feet tall
You've seen it all, you've seen it all
Watched the men who rode you, switch from sails to steam
In your belly you hold the treasures, few have ever seen
Most of 'em dream, most of 'em dream
Yes, I am a pirate, two hundred year's too late
The cannons don't thunder, there's nothin' to plunder
I'm an over-forty victim of fate
Arriving too late, arriving too late

Yoda

"Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you? Hmm? Hmm. And well you should not. For my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is."
―Yoda, to Luke Skywalker

Counted the Stars

Counted the stars on the 4th of July
Wishing we were rockets bursting in the sky
Talking about redemption and leaving things behind
I have these pictures and I keep these photographs
To remind me of a time
These pictures and these photographs
Let me know I'm doin' fine
We used to be so happy once upon a time
Once upon a time
But the sun sank west of the Mendocino County Line
And the sun sank west of the Mendocino County Line

Restless..................Memories included

There's a kind of a restless feeling
And it pulls me from within
It sets my senses reeling
And my wheels begin to spin
In the quietude of winter
You can hear the wild geese cry
And I will always love that sound
Until the day I die
There's a plain and a simple answer
To each and every quest
From every quiet dancer
Who might be a special guest
In a movie made for TV
Or a late night interview
You might even find them
On the 'Young and the Restless' too
Do you get that restless feeling
When you hear a whistle blast ?
Like an echo from the past
Of an old engine flying down
A road that's iron cast
The lake is blue, the sky is gray
The leaves have turned to gold
The wild goose will be on her way
The weather's much too cold
When the muskie and the old trout too
Have all gone down to rest?
We will be returning to the
Things that we love best?
Do you get that restless yearning
When you think about your dad?
And the scrimshaw that he had
Of an old schooner roving
'Neath a sky that's ironclad
There's a kind of a restless feeling
And it catches you, off guard
As we gaze off in the distance
Through the trees in my back yard
I can feel the restless yearning
Of those geese as off they roam
Then trade that for a warm bed
And a place I can call home
Will you get that restless yearning
When you hear the wicked blast?
Of a sceptre from the past
Of a cold diesel, rolling down a road that's built to last
Still, I get that restless feeling
When I hear a whistle blast
See an image from the past
Of an old schooner flying down a sky that's overcast

Plane Pr0n-Bing reveals map of biggest aircraft graveyard in the world | Daily Mail Online

Most of the folks who follow this blog are aware of the big boneyard at Davis Monthan AFB.
The Daily Mail had a piece on it with the Bing Map Images.

While it isn't the only aircraft boneyard in the world, it is the largest, containing around 4,400 aircraft. Planes that have served on aircraft carriers have to be washed to get rid of salt. All aircraft have their fuel tanks lines drained and any explosive devices are removed

I thought it was an interesting piece.....................................

Something for a Sunday: Somebody’s Gotta Do It – CNN's Mike Rowe Pays Tribute to Navy Seabees

"Hard work. That’s why it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he praised one of the hardest working groups (and often the most overlooked) groups around– the Navy Seabees. Do you know about the Navy Seabees?  If not, no worries.  Their work is rarely on the front pages of magazines (unless it’s their own - Seabee Magazine), and it’s one of the many reasons Mike Rowe is trying to get the word out about them.  A little background:"

Mike Rowe is a straight shooter..................young men would do well to take him as a role model, in this author's most humble opinion.

The remaining is at the link at the bottom.

A Gratuitous Picture is enclosed as well.

These Guided Smart Shells Could Revolutionize The Navy's Dated Deck Guns-Foxtrot Alpha

Boom from the Sea....................that doesn't miss.............................As My Friend David Robinson says, IS GOOD!

"Raytheon's 155mm M982 Excalibur extended-range guided artillery shell is being shrunk down to fit into the Mark 45 five inch deck guns that are deployed aboard the Navy's Cruisers and Destroyers. This miniaturized sea-going Excalibur, known as the N5, could triple the range of current five inch shells and offer pinpoint 'danger close' fire support like never before.
These Guided Smart Shells Could Revolutionize The Navy's Dated Deck Guns

The Excalibur round really is a modern marvel. It can be hurtled out of a howitzer barrel under immense G loads, then once it reaches the top of its trajectory, it begins its guided glide path via pop-out canard control fins, which greatly enhances the shell's range over a standard 155mm round. Because it is guided, it can also hit nearly any target at near vertical angles, allowing it to strike the enemy in the shadow of steep mountains or in urban environments that traditional ballistic artillery could not engage safely."

I think this is a good thing, even though I have no real knowledge of shipboard gunnery. Distance coupled with accuracy is something I had to practice as a Deer and North American Pronghorn hunter on the rolling plains of North Central Montana. When all it takes is coordinates plugged in...................the more dead bad guys, the better.

A little something from John F. Kennedy about that place so many of us love

We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch - we are going back from whence we came.

Behold the Rusting Beauty of Abandoned Train Graveyards - The Vintage News

"Retired from the tracks, many old trains find themselves in glorious graveyards, filled with car upon rusted car. Photos of these scrapyards let us witness the magnificent decay of these mighty vehicles."

From various places around the world, pictures of trains, rusting away.......................
It would be nice to see some of these old steam locomotives and their tenders in a museum but economics does have a hand in things these days.
