Happy Hour

"IF A LIFETIME CAN BE LIKENED TO A DAY, THEN THIS IS HAPPY HOUR!"
BUCK PENNINGTON

Mother, Mother Ocean

Mother, Mother Ocean, I've heard you call
Wanted to sail upon your waters since I was three feet tall
You've seen it all, you've seen it all
Watched the men who rode you, switch from sails to steam
In your belly you hold the treasures, few have ever seen
Most of 'em dream, most of 'em dream
Yes, I am a pirate, two hundred year's too late
The cannons don't thunder, there's nothin' to plunder
I'm an over-forty victim of fate
Arriving too late, arriving too late

Yoda

"Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you? Hmm? Hmm. And well you should not. For my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is."
―Yoda, to Luke Skywalker

Counted the Stars

Counted the stars on the 4th of July
Wishing we were rockets bursting in the sky
Talking about redemption and leaving things behind
I have these pictures and I keep these photographs
To remind me of a time
These pictures and these photographs
Let me know I'm doin' fine
We used to be so happy once upon a time
Once upon a time
But the sun sank west of the Mendocino County Line
And the sun sank west of the Mendocino County Line

Pass this story on to future generations: theChive

This was in theChive's Weekly Weekap this morning. There are some great photos, some with good captions.

I was able to visit Missouri in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in late 1979 with my parents and my toddler daughter.

I have to admit that it was a sobering experience.

Here are few of the pictures from the post.

This is the USS Missouri (BB-63), better known as "Mighty Mo".

From a historical perspective, the USS Missouri is arguably one of the most famous ships the world has ever seen. Let's begin with an over-view of some of her many feats.

These achievements over such a long period of time are amazing but it is one other event in which history will forever remember this ship.

HMS Hood's bell unveiled at Navy museum Portsmouth - BBC News

The restored bell from the World War Two battlecruiser HMS Hood has been unveiled 75 years after the ship was sunk by the Bismarck.

Solemn Day for the Royal Navy and HM Dockyard Portsmouth.

I think most of us read about the sinking of HMS Hood by Bismarck and the subsequent pursuit and sinking of Bismarck.....

I read Ludovic Kennedy's book as a youngster.

For Bergen-Belsen ‘babies,’ fond memories amid a scarred landscape-The Times Of Israel

This is about the Displaced Persons Camp in the same area as the infamous concentration camp. Goor Read. The entire story is at the link at the bottom.
"BERGEN-BELSEN, GERMANY — “It’s called rote grütze. I remember eating it all the time here as a young child,” said Aviva Tal as she tucked into the German fruit pudding as brightly red-colored as her stylishly cropped hair. When she finished her first portion she got up to get more from the buffet table, bringing several little glasses of the pudding, topped with vanilla cream, for the others at her table to enjoy, as well.
Tal, a Bar-Ilan University Yiddish professor in her late 60s, was eating lunch with some close friends of similar age under a large tent next to the museum at the Gedenkstätte Bergen-Belsen (Bergen-Belsen Memorial Site) late last week.
They had all come to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Bergen-Belsen. The lunch was a break during a full day of touring the concentration camp site, as well as the neighboring displaced persons camp (now a British NATO base) ahead of the official commemoration ceremonies that took place on April 26."

Kursk-Air & Space Magazine

"The greatest tank battle in history might have ended differently had it not been for the action in the air."

Two of my favourite aircraft took part in this massive action, the IL-2 Sturmovik and the JU-87.

The full story is at the link below. It is very interesting, at least to me it is. Enjoy a good read!

Milwaukee Railroad Shops is on track for the upcoming year-Sioux City Journal

"The 12-foot long, 1,200-pound vintage diesel locomotive will pull three passenger cars, totaling 36 passengers, on a 1 1/2-mile loop around the facility, according to Matt Merk, executive director. One of the passenger cars will be handicap accessible."

I remember the Milwaukee Road Pacific Extension as a kid. The Milwaukee and the Northern Pacific ran side by side from Garrison Junction to Missoula. The Electric Hiawathas were used.

I had the pleasure to dump ballast on a remnant of the Milwaukee Road in Southeast Montana, Southwest North Dakota and Northwest South Dakota. I love that country!

Behold the Rusting Beauty of Abandoned Train Graveyards - The Vintage News

"Retired from the tracks, many old trains find themselves in glorious graveyards, filled with car upon rusted car. Photos of these scrapyards let us witness the magnificent decay of these mighty vehicles."

From various places around the world, pictures of trains, rusting away.......................
It would be nice to see some of these old steam locomotives and their tenders in a museum but economics does have a hand in things these days.

Sad. Good Ships. Dying.

The Breakers Yard
Brownsville Texas
Already in the process are Forrestal and Saratoga.
The Constellation arrived a couple of weeks ago. She still has her island, for now.
The three Good Ships I made cruises in are scheduled for this as well.
Those who have gone down to the sea in ships will not really understand. It causes us to shed a tear or two.
