Hornets over Wake Island

Hornets in formation ready to refuel from a Kansas Air Guard KC135 over Wake Island. The tanker is from the 190th ARW at Topeka Forbes Field.
And I have been to Wake Island............once for a plane change in September of 1979 on a TransPac taking eight A6s back to Whidbey Island WA. Field elevation is 8 feet.
Link is to Air Attack.
With a really cool picture.

  1. I've flown into Wake a couple o' few times, too. The first time I landed there I looked out the window and said to no one in particular "the pilot is gonna put this big-ass plane down on that tiny lil island? THIS will be interesting!" It was, too... mainly coz all the guys stationed there were at the terminal to stare at the women deplaning while we refueled. It was their BIG social event for the week.
