Kitty Hawk bid farewell to San Diego on 3 January 1987, as the ship departed her homeport of 25 years and set out on a six-month world cruise. During the circumnavigation, Kitty Hawk and CVW-9 again showed their commitment to safety by conducting a third fatality-free deployment. Kitty Hawk spent 106 consecutive days on station in the Indian Ocean and was again awarded the Navy Expeditionary Medal and the Meritorious Unit Commendation for its service. The world cruise ended at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard on 3 July. Six months later, Kitty Hawk began a Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) overhaul. Kitty Hawk emerged from the yards on 2 August 1990. The overhaul was estimated to have added 20 years of service to the ship. The Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department was also awarded the Air Forces, US Pacific Fleet Departmental Excellence Award, the Black "E" for this deployment.

ORPO, Tooter Teague commanded the Kitty Hawk. Did you know him?
ReplyDeleteNot when I was aboard.
ReplyDeleteHi ORPO! I am pretty positive that Tooter served as Commander of the Kitty Hawk for about two years...woulda' been roughly '80, or '81.
ReplyDeleteI grew up next door to his Mom and Dad. His Dad was a real estate developer here in Bossier City, LA. His Mama was so proud...really our whole mid-sized city was. He was a "Bossier Boy." All-star football player, crazy as hell Navy pilot...the whole nine yards.
I remember that it was about that time because "everyman" video tape machines, and cameras were coming on the market. My Daddy (who had his foot broken by Tooter when they were in High School) owned an appliance & TV store, and we had access to big old clunky VHS taping equipment. I made a VHS tape of the Mayor, The Lion's Club, the Rotary Club...and his Mama congratulating him on his Command...kind of an "attaboy" from the city.
When he retired, he moved back into that same house where he grew up. His Mom & Dad had passed away. He served on the School Board, and in various civic organizations until he died. He died pretty young, too. He was 64, I think. Drank a lot...just sayin'...
I found this on the net:
