USAF got a lot of mileage out of those old C-47s in Vietnam. The AC-47 got most of the recognition because it was the first gunship, but the AF also converted a sizable contingent into EC-47s, an airborne ELINT platform. A good friend of mine survived a crash landing in an EC-47 at Da Nang in '71... he was lucky to get out of that alive.

ReplyDeleteThe latest on hold proposal is the AC-27 Stinger. The C-27 has been thought of as a budget version of the AC-130.
